For those of you who know me, you know I have an unholy fascination with Canadian indie music. I’ve even gone so far as to suggest that I wish I could come back in another life as a scenester in the Canadian music scene.
There’s this one song that kept nagging at me, at the back of my mind. I’d hear it, love it, forget about it for a while, hear it again and love it again. The song is Killing Time by Jets Overhead.
Apparently they shared the stage with the Dandy Warhols and you can feel the Dandy’s influence alll over their music. Something about their tunes gets in your head and takes up residence.
So, of course one song is not going to satisfy, so off I go to their website–which is quite nice I must say. I click on Music, and….(cue the choirs of angels here)…ALL OF THEIR SONGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD. FOR FREE! They accept voluntary donations via Paypal, which I will be leaving, because these guys are just too good to fade away.
They are definately rock, with a psychedelic vibe. Very atmospheric, too. Highly recommended.
The 84 Lumber Golf Classic was this past week and there were more than enough ‘complimentary’ tickets going around, so we said, “What the heck. Let’s go.”
But not to see the PGA Tour. Oh no. What we went to see was the Black Eyed Peas. On the Polo Field at Nemacolin Woodlands. In the mud.
Opening act for the Peas was Margot A or B or C or T. She was just okay. Her bandmates tried to get the crowd to join in a sing-a-long…twice…but the crowd wouldn’t oblige. I kinda felt bad for them. Margot was on at 7ish and off before 8.
After a lengthy wait, at 8:30ish the Peas took the stage. We thought we had some decent spots claimed, but as soon as they hit the stage every kid and drunken girlfriend went up on some poor guy’s shoulders and our view was effectively diminished. Thank goodness for the video screen for poor schmucks like us who were too timid to push forward.
One thing I always told my daughter–You can tell who’s really good by how they perform live. Fergie is really good. She was quite the show(wo)man, doing one-handed front walkovers while holding a mike and singing. And singing well. Color me impressed. She really stole the show for me. And she didn’t even pee her pants. Well, that I could see. I was sure she wouldn’t play “London Bridge” since it was a solo effort and she was with BEP, but sure enough, she did. The whole crowd was singing and dancing by this time.
They played most all their stuff from Elephunk and Monkey Business, including My Humps, Don’t Phunk With My Heart, Pump It and Hey Mama. By far, my favorite of the night was Let’s Get Retarded. Yes, ‘retarded’, not ‘it started’. I fell in love with that song when I first heard Elephunk and was always somewhat disappointed to hear the politically corrected lyrics once it hit the top ten. apl.de.ap also did a rap that was very cool…starting out slow and rappin’ like the FedEx guy by the end.
Good show, even though the video cut out before the encore. And don’t even get me started about the mob that formed at the bus lines once the concert was over. Really. To live through that once was enough.
Okay, I’ve gone way beyond my teenage crush and straight into obsession with this new CD, FutureSex/LoveSounds. Yeah, I’ve heard all the songs now, compliments the internets. Will this stop me from buying the CD. Oh, hell no. I’ve got it in my Amazon shopping cart right now.
My favorite track, by far, is still …What Goes Around…Comes Around (Interlude). I’m a sucker for orchestral elements in popular music, so the strings hooked me first. Secondly, JT’s voice shows some exquisite restraint–and exquisite pain–in this tune. I’m literally shivering in anticipation of cathartic release once the interlude comes around. Rumor has it the song is about his relationship with Britney. Girl, if that’s true, you better get out the body armour to deal with the karmic payback comin’ to you. Poor, tortured JT. He can cry a river on my shoulder anyday.
You gotta love the Hype Machine. Always a good place to discover new music. I’m skimming the “Most Blogged” list and thought, “What a cool band name. Let me check them out.” Silversun Pickups is certainly an intriguing name, but once I heard their music, well, intrigued just isn’t a big enough word for how badly I needed to hear their entire catalogue.
I’m seeing comparison to Smashing Pumpkins all over the place, and I get that. Although some of the songs remind me of Pinback, too. Especially Three Seed, from their most recent release, Carnavas. And shades of Hendrix, too, on Well Thought Out Twinkles.
Their sound is most definately alt rock–moody and atmospheric, with fuzzy guitars and a sweet bassline. Yeah, the lead singer is most certainly channeling Billy Corgan. Amazingly beautiful and haunting.
Check them out on myspace. Make your own call.
